This new video by two people who call themselves “Pete” and “Hannah” popped up yesterday. It’s an awfully fun mashup of Scientology and old school video gaming, and the production values are very high.
The Church of Scientology is very clearly mentioned in it, and the church’s practices are solidly parodied.
But are Pete and Hannah pushing their little project a bit too far?
Over at IndieGogo, they’re asking to raise $45,000 to turn this into an actual game.
It’s true that the Church of Scientology is not the litigating nightmare that it might have once been, but it’s kind of hard to imagine that Ken Moxon or Monique Yingling aren’t going to begin to twitch once they realize what’s going on here.
After all, a parody video is one thing. (And it really is a darn good video.) But to raise money in the name of the Church of Scientology?
Yikes. This is one stunt that is going to be fun to watch!

What is ‘The Church’…is it a religion? A business? A cult? Help our heroes delve into the secrets of this secretive organization in this exciting new game and find out the truth behind ‘The Source’!

PROJECT MASTERMIND - ELEVATOR ENTERTAINMENT
Elevator Entertainment is a fresh, new entertainment company that focuses on modern forms of storytelling through new mediums such as video games and social media. With a background in television documentaries, the team is uniquely qualified to develop story-based titles containing meaningful social commentary.
Many talented people collaborated on this project, but they have asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from the Church. Our unnamed game designers, for example, are responsible for some of the world’s most recognized (spellcheck Americanized that; I was going to let the “s” stand!) games, but they fear their virtual design prowess affords them little protection in the real world. Kylee has resisted the cautionary advice of friends and family and chosen to keep her identity public as she “thinks a church is the last thing you should be scared of. Churches are institutions that teach kindness and forgiveness.”
We wish we could share everyone’s credentials at this time, but to give you some assurance that your money isn’t being wasted on amateurs, you can read Kylee’s profile (until it’s mysteriously deleted or hacked) or check out the Elevator Entertainment website.

GAMEPLAY
‘The Source’ will be a 2D action/platform game in the vein of the popular ‘Metroid’ and ‘Castlevania’ classics. Players will control either Pete or Hannah, each of whom have their own unique abilities, and attempt to navigate the different areas of the organization. They will have to complete the tasks set for them by ‘The Church’ as part of their trials (such as finding and eliminating a set number of cereal box enemies within the stage), whilst also scouring the stages for other information and evidence of the organization’s wider reach and true intentions.
The wide-open level design will encourage exploration to discover the secrets of each area, such as new abilities and upgrades. In addition, the players will be graded upon completion of each stage in various areas, such as the time taken to complete the stage and the percentage of secrets that were found.
The length of each episode will vary depending on the degree to which it is explored. An episode will consist of an expansive stage with multiple nooks and crannies to explore.
EPISODIC STRUCTURE
The game will be presented in an episodic structure, with each episode comprising of one large play area representing a specific test from ‘The Church’. The progress of a character will be saved, so that any new abilities and upgrades earned will be carried over into subsequent episodes. Completing extra tasks and secret objectives in this episode may even have repercussions on later episodes, from accessible areas to the type of environment itself!
Please note that this Indiegogo campaign is solely for the first episode of the series which will play through the opening scene and one scenario. Any money we raise over the amount requested will go towards the creation of additional episodes.
CHARACTERS
HEROES
Pete is a man with a broken heart who has just been dumped by his girlfriend. The Church has told him they can help him fix his broken heart and find a new girlfriend. Sweet but clumsy, he has the physical strength to break through into otherwise inaccessible areas. Follow him on Twitter@TSG_Pete!
Hannah has just returned from the Middle-East working as a war correspondent. She is looking for an undercover story that will help her break out of the news cycle. Possessing cat-like agility, Hannah can move faster and jump higher to find areas out of reach to those less able. Follow her on Twitter @TSG_Hannah!
ENEMIES
Whilst on their adventure, Pete and Hannah will encounter many creatures, some friendlier than others! These include killer clams, walking cereal boxes and living books! These creatures have clearly been concealed from public view by ‘The Church’…what other secrets could they be hiding?!
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The game will see a DRM-free release initially on the PC for Windows Vista/7/8. With additional funding beyond the initial mark, we will investigate the possibility of releasing ‘The Source’ on other formats such as iOS and Android.
The 'digital download' offered through all the perks (except for the $1 perk) will be for the first 'episode' of the series.
IN THE FUTURE…
We plan to release a series of ‘Episodes’ for ‘The Source’, with each new episode building on the feedback from the last. In addition, players who have completed previous episodes in the series will be able to load their character into the new episode in order to retain the abilities and secrets that they have already uncovered.
Here’s how you can help:We need $45,000 to get the first episode of the game made. The first episode will be a simple introduction of Pete and Hannah's entry into the game with one game play. If we manage to go beyond the intial request we will invest the money into future episodes.
Here’s how it breaks down:In return for your contribution, you’ll have put a smile on people's faces. You’ll probably also be responsible for causing disruption to instiutions.
Not only that, but check out our perks! From virtual messages from our avatar, to in-game rewards, t-shirts and posters – this is an opportunity you’d be mad to miss. And of course, you will recieve an DRM-free digital copy of the first episode of 'The Source' at every level of support (excluding the $1 perk).
Other Ways You Can HelpIf you don’t have a $ to spare – that’s OK! There are tons of other ways you can help us reach our goal. Please tell anyone and everyone who might be interested in this project by forwarding this page in your email, sharing on Facebook and posting to Twitter!
