Ex-scientologist: I was brainwashed
A remarkable picture of the inner workings of the Church of Scientology has been published by a member of one of the families most closely associated with it.
Jenna Miscavage Hill was the third generation of a family of scientologists, born into it and raised in its disciplines. Eventually, like her parents, she left and has now written a devastating account of her experience, particularly in its most secretive inner core, what is known as the Sea Organisation or Sea-org.
She told Today presenter James Naughtie about a life that was intimately bound up and directed by scientology.
We asked the Church of Scientology for an interview - they declined, but said in a statement: "We note that recollections in Ms Hill's book about her schooling are dramatically at odds with the recollections of 30 of her classmates.
"The church has long respected the family unit while accommodating and helping those raising children. The church does not engage in any activities that mistreat, neglect or force children to engage in manual labour. The church follows all laws with respect to children. Claims to the contrary are false.
"The Church of Scientology does not counsel its staff members or parishioners to have abortions. Any such statement is false.
"Sea Organisation couples are permitted to marry, but... if Sea Organisation couples wish to have children, they must do so outside the Sea Organisation. They may return once the children have grown."
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 8 March 2013.

Suri's a big girl now! Katie Holmes struggles to lift her daughter, 6, as they brave New York snow
|
She may be six-years-old, but Suri is still not too old to get a lift.
The schoolgirl was spotted getting hoisted up by her doting mother Katie Holmes on Friday as they ventured out in the slippery New York snow.
However, diminutive Katie appeared to struggle to lift her little lady as they headed towards their waiting car.

Suri was dressed in a warm winter coat for their outing teamed with bright pink wellies.
Katie, 34, meanwhile, rugged up in a black coat and blue jeans, wearing minimal make-up and her long brunette hair loose.
In a recent interview Katie revealed she bases her chic, effortless style on British supermodel Kate Moss' clothes, as well as model and actress Lauren Hutton and leggy beauty Christy Turlington because they all have 'inspiring' taste in fashion.
All rugged up: The six-year-old schoolgirl was clad in a warm winter coat team with pink wellies
Asked whose personal style she admires, Katie replied: 'I love Kate Moss' style and the way she can transform herself. Lauren Hutton becomes more beautiful as she ages; a large part of that is just who she is and the work she does. It's very inspiring. And Christy Turlington is gorgeous.'
The actress also revealed she keeps fit by working up a sweat with Bikram yoga classes, but stays clear of her fellow gym-goers wearing tight, lycra shorts and thinks the embarrassing look should be banned.

Katie joked: 'I love Bikram yoga. I like the sweat. I feel like it's good for me and good for my skin. I just don't like the guys who wear those little tiny shorts. Why don't they have a sign? It's not OK!'
After a good workout, the former 'Dawson's Creek' star likes to pamper her skin with expensive moisturiser and credits her hydration-intensive skincare routine for her glowing complexion.
She added to ELLE magazine: 'I love moisturiser. I don't stick with the same one because I feel like my skin gets used to it. Its like an exercise thing - you have to switch it up. I also sleep in SK-II masks and try to be a nice person so that I don't get stressed out!'
Snow problem: The freezing weather didn't seem to bother Katie as she clutched a hot coffee and Suri's favourite toy
Glossy: Katie was later seen leaving the John Frieda Cares salon with luscious locks after a pamper session
